I have got to say that Jenji Kohan has to be one of the most brilliant women in Hollywood. She has earned her stripes working in shows such going back as far as The Fresh Prince of Bell Air and Will and Grace but there is no doubt that Weeds was a masterpiece. Her ability to take something that is dark and still bring humor, wit, sarcasm and great dialogue all while addressing real issues at the same time sets her apart as being one of the greats in Hollywood.
I think there is no doubt that she has done that especially well in Season Three of Orange is the New Black. Season two was actually a lot darker than the first and this one.
Season three hits the nail on the head with very real systemic issues of the private prison industry and the prison industrial complex in general. There were back stories shown for almost every major character, and made those stories were integral to connecting the many plot arcs. There is a very big theme of faith and redemption that actually starts because of cafeteria food. What I liked about this season is that you see Piper going far more to the dark side as the rest of the cast (not all) rise above their past and current situations. The season finale offers much intrigue, and danger, and a fair amount of humor in a multi plot cliff hanger. Now I have to wait and stew another year for season 4 to come along but damn if this season wasn’t the best of season of them all. Definitely worth spending a few days on Netflix checking out.
